Montpelier, Vt. –  The Vermont Division for Historic Preservation announces the opening of the State Historic Sites for the 2023 season. Opening on Friday, May 26, are the Bennington Battle Monument, Chimney Point, Hubbardton Battlefield, Mount Independence, President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site, and Senator Justin Morrill State Historic Site. The President Chester A. Arthur State Historic Site, closed since 2019 due to Covid, will open for the season on Saturday, May 27.

“The Vermont State Historic Sites offer a glimpse of history where it happened and provide exciting experiences for everyone,” said Laura V. Trieschmann. “We invite you to discover Vermont’s rich heritage and how it impacted our national story. Hike the trails through the Revolutionary War fort and battleground, study the details of a high-style Gothic Revival homestead in Strafford, and view three states from 177.7 feet above at the Bennington Battle Monument.”

This year, the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site will offer history lovers of all ages the chance to experience the centennial celebration of the swearing in of a president of the United States, just as Calvin Coolidge did at 2:47 a.m. on August 3, 1923. The event will be recreated again at 2:47 p.m. for those who slept through the early dawn event just as Coolidge’s housekeeper did. Join us and explore the new exhibit, “Coolidge’s Contemporaries: The ascension of early 20th century world leaders.” This special exhibit compares President Coolidge’s unorthodox but humble oath of office to the ascension ceremonies of other influential leaders from across the globe.
