A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Vermont State Colleges System on January 6, 2025. The request was made by us at Green Mountain Times, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
We requested records under the Vermont Public Records Law, §315 et seq., specifically seeking information about university employees' compensation. The request included details from all universities within the system, including community colleges.
The specifics of our request included obtaining a list of all university employees with their respective names, titles, work emails, university names, employment types, and compensation amounts.
As a media organization dedicated to transparency and accountability in public institutions, we believe access to these public records is crucial for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. Given our role in disseminating information to the public, we also expressed our eligibility for a fee waiver as a media professional.
Our aim is to provide the public with an insight into how their tax dollars are being spent in higher education and ensure that there is fairness and transparency in employee compensation within the Vermont State Colleges System.
