Black-legged ticks are the primary tick species responsible for spreading Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, in the northeastern United States. Black-legged ticks are continuing their spread northward into Maine and Canada, bringing tick-borne diseases with them. Along with B. burgdorferi, ticks carry several other pathogens that cause babesiosis, anaplasmosis, tickborne relapsing fever, and other diseases. This talk will provide an overview of the tick life cycle, how ticks obtain and spread pathogens, and what habitats they live in. Additionally, we will discuss current research going on at Dartmouth College studying tick abundance and pathogen prevalence trends.

About Lucas Price: Lucas is a Research Associate at Dartmouth College, whose research is focused on ecology, having spent the past 5 years studying tick ecology in the Northeast region. His work evaluates the relationships that black-legged ticks have with environmental factors, host species, and climate. His training is primarily in wildlife biology and natural resources, with a B.S. and Ph.D. from West Virginia University in Wildlife & Fisheries and Forest Resources respectively, and a M.S. degree from Central Michigan University in Conservation Biology.
