A federal grand jury has indicted John Caleb Wright, a 43-year-old resident of Williston, Vermont, on charges of attempting to evade payment of over $1 million in taxes. The indictment was announced by the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont on June 12, 2025. Wright is scheduled to be arraigned before United States Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle on July 22 at 11:00 A.M. in Burlington.
Court records indicate that after being notified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) about enforced collection measures against his assets to satisfy a tax debt exceeding $1 million, Wright allegedly transferred his cryptocurrency holdings twice in 2021. These transfers moved his assets from a cryptocurrency exchange accessible to the IRS through legal processes to an off-exchange, unhosted wallet that was beyond the IRS’s reach.
The United States Attorney’s Office clarified that an indictment consists solely of allegations and emphasized that Wright is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison. However, any sentence would be determined by the District Court following advisory guidelines and statutory sentencing factors.
Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher praised the investigatory work conducted by the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation division.
Assistant United States Attorney Corinne Smith is prosecuting the case, while Brooks McArthur, Esq., represents Wright.
