Vermont Catamounts athlete Emma Wapshare won the women’s javelin throw at the America East Championships with a personal best throw of 47.83 meters, according to a May 9 announcement. Her performance led Vermont to tie for third place with UAlbany at 20 points after the first day of competition.
The results highlight significant achievements for both the men’s and women’s teams. The Vermont men are in ninth place with eight points after several strong performances in distance events and relays.
Head Coach Matt Belfield said, “Our teams had a good day for sure. We scored more points than we were seeded for on both sides and got a couple extra people through to finals for tomorrow. So lovely for Emma to get the javelin title. It was a long road back and she finally got her victory at America East. Big points from the distance folks with a bunch of UVM top-ten marks…shows that we are doing the right things for sure. Great hurdle race for Ryleigh and our Decathletes and Heptathlete fought through some rough conditions for a good Day one. We will dry off and get some rest for tomorrow.”
Wapshare’s win earned Vermont ten points, with her best throw coming on her first attempt, making her the first Catamount to win this event since Nika Ouellette in 2014. Other notable performances included Mozden finishing sixth in the men’s 3000 steeplechase (9:14.41), Wolfe securing seventh place in the men’s 10k (30:33.44), and Fryer advancing to Sunday’s final in the women’s 1500m.
Several athletes set personal or season-best times during their events, contributing additional points toward team standings as they move into subsequent rounds of competition.
Vermont will continue competing on Saturday starting with the Men’s Pole Vault at 9 a.m., while fans can follow live timing online or watch coverage via ESPN+.
