The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) in Vermont recently held a virtual session to discuss the legislative actions taken during the latest session of the Vermont General Assembly. State Director Shawn Shouldice provided an overview of the legislative developments in Montpelier and their potential effects on small businesses.

During this session, it was highlighted that the Vermont Legislature passed several significant measures, including the “Clean Heat Standard,” an increase in payroll taxes to fund a state-run childcare program, and additional regulations. Governor Phil Scott vetoed both the Clean Heat Standard bill and the childcare payroll tax, aligning with NFIB and small business owners. However, these vetoes were overridden by the Democrat-Progressive super-majorities in both the Senate and House.

Participants who attended were offered a link to access a recording of this discussion. NFIB members with further questions are encouraged to contact Shawn Shouldice at Shawn.Shouldice@nfib.org.

NFIB plans to organize more virtual events for its members in the future. Members interested in specific policy topics can share their suggestions with Grassroots Manager Julianna Rauf at Julianna.Rauf@nfib.org.

Additionally, NFIB President Brad Close’s 80th anniversary video is available for those who missed it: “NFIB Celebrates 80th Anniversary – NFIB.”
