It's that time of year when what you wear and carry on a hike is of utmost importance. People's needs and preferences vary slightly, of course, but you may want to start off with a base layer and midweight layer, and carry a down jacket and wind-resistant shell for chilly summits and descents. On bottom, we like synthetic long underwear, windproof hiking pants, wool socks (and an extra pair in the pack!) and Microspikes.
Snow is piling up in the mountains, but conditions are likely to be quite variable on the way up, and likely muddy in places. For w inter hiking primer or reminder, check out our winter hiking guide: https://www.greenmountainclub.org/hiking/winter-hiking/
