Mon Sep 12th 5:30pm - 7:00pm
Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning (GMALL) will host a five-part fiction-writing course with writing instructor Christopher Dant. The sessions will take place on Mondays, September 12, 19, 26, October 3 and 10 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. via Zoom video conference. As anyone who has tried to write will tell you, creating a compelling and memorable story is hard work. Sure, they come out all shiny and exciting in The New Yorker or other published venues, but how did they get to be so good? In this writing workshop, we’ll examine what goes into a story that draws people in and stands out from the rest. You’ll learn the basic tenets of writing—creating strong characters and mastering strong dialogue and a vivid scene with those characters. And using different points of view. You’ll learn how to show rather than tell your story. At the end, you’ll use all these elements together in your own short story you’ll share with the group. This is a small and supportive, student-centric workshop in which your writing will featured weekly through methods proven to rapidly advance your ability to write fiction. It’s for students new to fiction writing or intermediate writers who would like to return to fundamentals. Class size is limited. Registration is $100 for the five-part course.
