This course will teach participants how to craft and use pegged mortise and tenon joinery to build timber frame structures. We will focus on traditional hand-cut joinery and the art of the square rule system. There will also be evening slide presentations that will cover both old and new timber frame styles and techniques. We will hand-raise the frames on the final day. Students in the course will together build a small pavilion and kiosk at the Nature Center, structures that together demonstrate a wide range of timber craft techniques and joinery. The course is led by master artisans Seth Kelley and Skip Dewhirst, who have been teaching timber framing together for over 20 years.

  • Square rule layout
  • Timber selection and species
  • Tool selection, care and sharpening
  • Handsaw techniques
  • Mortise and tenon joinery
  • Riving and making ash/oak pegs
  • Raising strategies and decisions
Timing and Details

The course will run approximately 9 am – 5 pm each day, with some evening slide presentations.

Lunches are included in the course fee.

Tools and materials will be provided for students as part of the course. The instructors will discuss tips for selecting and purchasing your own timber framing tool kit.
