Long Trail and its shelters are open for use through the fall and winter

Although our caretakers have left the woods for the season, the Long Trail and its shelters are open for use through the fall and winter. The off-season months can be an exciting time to explore with less crowded shelters and more views thanks to fallen leaves. But shelters, privies, and the trail aren’t maintained during this time. Below are a few tips to keep you and others safe in the off-season:

With no caretakers to assist hikers, make sure to tell someone at home where you are going and when you plan to return.

Shelters have no insulation or heat source, so be prepared for freezing nighttime temperatures with extra layers and a warm sleeping bag. (Pro tip: if you don’t want to splurge on a winter rated bag, try the cheaper option of a sleeping bag liner)

Leaves and branches can accumulate on the trail making it hard to see the footpath, so be diligent about following the blazes. If you do not see a blaze within a ten-minute walk at a brisk pace, stop, look, and backtrack if necessary.
